The world of luxury jewellery is ever-evolving, with captivating trends that redefine elegance and personal expression. In 2024, the jewellery landscape is seeing a fascinating mix of timeless elegance and modern innovation.

We spoke with Michael Falocco, FGAA, a jewellery designer at The Perth Mint and a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Australia (FGAA), to delve into the top five trends in luxury jewellery this year.

1. Modern heirlooms

One of the most compelling trends is the rise of modern heirlooms. These pieces are designed to be cherished across generations, blending contemporary styles with classic elements. “The consumer desire for modern-day heirlooms pieces are on the rise,” Mr Falocco said. “Gender neutral pendants, brooches, rings, and watches are most sought after. Many that are inspired by the modern heirlooms trend are often drawn to our customisation services to develop bespoke designs that reflect their family values.”

2. Quiet luxury

Quiet luxury emphasises subtlety and sophistication. “It’s all about those elusive ‘if you know, you know’ jewellery pieces,” Mr Falocco explained.

People are moving towards jewellery that speaks of quiet luxury – pieces that are not necessarily flashy but are made from the finest Australian sourced materials, such as Australian Origin Gold®, and exhibit exceptional craftsmanship, like the Argyle Treasures™ ring. This trend reflects a broader movement towards sustainability and mindful consumption, where quality takes precedence over quantity.

3. Pearls

Pearls are experiencing a renaissance, shedding their old-fashioned image and being reimagined in fresh, modern designs. “Pearls are something you can wear with pretty much everything, including the different types of jewellery in your existing collection,” Mr Falocco said. “The Perth Mint has a curated collection of the finest pearls and has a vast range of Allure South Sea pearls.”

4. Colour

Vivid, vibrant colours are making a big statement in the world of luxury jewellery. Whether through gemstones and bold coloured diamonds, colour is at the forefront of current jewellery design. “ In particular, we’re seeing colour in jewellery maximisim, such as big bold earrings,” Mr Falocco said.

“Colour is dominating the runways and red carpets this year – think coloured diamonds, sapphire, emeralds, rubies, garnets and morganite. We’re seeing grand designs including clip-on and oversized studs in a glittering array of vibrant hues.”

5. Bespoke jewellery

Personalisation has become a key aspect of luxury, and bespoke jewellery is leading this trend. Custom-designed pieces that reflect an individual’s taste and story are in high demand.

“Self-expression and individuality in a treasured jewellery piece is becoming more popular, especially as mass production designs flood the market,” Mr Falocco said.

This trend is driven by the desire for individuality and the need for pieces that resonate on a personal level.

“We are seeing this more and more at The Perth Mint with customers requesting our in-house jewellery designer hand sketch and craft their desired forever piece, while also assisting with selecting their favourite gemstone.”
