Albany’s Cr Thomas Brough says he will ‘defy’ orders for inclusivity training, calls ‘forced indoctrination’

An Albany councillor and Liberal candidate has publicly refused to complete his directed inclusivity training, labelling it “forced indoctrination” and akin to “conversion therapy”. Cr Thomas Brough used his councillor report time at the beginning of Tuesday’s council meeting to declare he would not undergo the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Respectful and Inclusive Workplace Training, as decided by fellow councillors at their June meeting. The training was directed as a response to multiple complaints filed against him four months ago when he suggested the plus in LGBTQIA+ included paedophiles. Although he said he would not criticise a council decision, Cr Brough compared his “forced re-education” and “thought re-programming” to that of a military dictatorship in North Korea, China or Russia. “It is in the public domain that council decided that their ratepayers should foot the bill for a uniquely un-Australian punishment: my forced re-education by government bureaucracy — conversion therapy, or at least on the cusp of it,” he said. “Let me be clear: I will not comply. Let me be clear: I defy you.” Cr Brough went on to describe the coverage of his comments by the Albany Advertiser and ABC Great Southern as “editorial wish-casting,” addressing journalists and editors as “comrade” and “commissar,” respectively. Albany Pride’s Tiger Bird said they knew Cr Brough had made further “incorrect and damaging comments”. “It’s almost funny with him, how desperate he is,” they said. “He’s an aspiring politician with no platform, no policy, nothing to fight on but these weird ideological buzzwords. “It’s just attention-seeking from someone who’s demonstrated that they’ve got no political prowess or platform to speak on, and embarrassing for the WA liberals that this is the best they have to offer — this man whose only contribution to political discourse is nonsense conspiracies. “We look forward to seeing what council’s next steps are to address his ongoing inflammatory and divisive comments and to manage his blatant and public disrespect for the formal council processes.”
