GSSA 2024: Rovers notch huge upset win in men’s division one, Denmark register third straight clean sheet

Rovers caused the biggest upset of the men’s first division one competition so far, handing ladder leaders Caledonians their first defeat of the Great Southern Soccer Association season on Saturday.

Rovers netted three second-half goals on their way to a stunning 4-0 victory over the reigning champions with Bradford Fakaafu contributing a superb brace.

Justin Bielecki and Jonathan Masing also scored in the victory that pulled their side to within one point of their opponents in the league standings.

Phoenix notched a crucial victory over Polonia to stay within striking distance of the top two, winning 4-0 courtesy of a sensational Malcom Van Burgel hat-trick.

Phoenix did most of the damage in the first half, belting home three goals.

Denmark secured a brilliant 3-0 victory over reigning premiers Mt Barker on Friday night, tightening their grip on the top of the women’s division one ladder.

Abby Carter, Stella Gleeson and Uzsani Lacey all scored in the commanding victory marking their third consecutive win without conceding a goal.

Caledonians held off a determined Phoenix side to register a strong 3-1 victory, having led 1-0 at half-time.

Kayla Stoney, Milla Trichilo and Rhiannon Cross all converted while Jasmine Koster got the goal for Phoenix.

Rovers leapt into the top four with a 2-1 triumph against Polonia.

All three goals were scored in the opening 45 minutes, which featured an own goal from either team, however a Sienna Owen finish proved the difference between the sides.

In round eight of the men’s division two on Saturday, Rovers Black thumped Caledonians 10-2, Rovers Gold defeated Bayswater 5-4 in a game for the neutrals and Polonia won 4-1 over Phoenix.

Denmark Rezzies recorded a 5-1 win over Mt Barker in round nine of the women’s division one on Friday night, while Phoenix beat Sharks 5-1 and Bayswater handed Rovers a 4-1 defeat.
