Star Bremer Bay brothers prove to be top shots at the Albany Open tennis tournament at Emu Point Tennis Club

The unbeatable Bremer Bay Dawson duo go undefeated for another year, rising to the challenge for the Albany Open tennis tournament A-grade title at Emu Point Tennis Club. Star brothers Brock Dawson and Levi Dawson proved to be tough competitors during their impressive 42 games on January 11. With the 2025 title they lived up to their reputation as top seeds among the 62 players which travelled across the Great Southern as far as Merredin and Perth. Runners-up Sam Graham and Tom Street put up a strong fight in the men’s doubles A-grade but could not tackle the reigning victors. Men’s doubles B-grade champions Jake Becroft and Courtney Hall refused to lose puff during their 48 games, sending Peter Godfrey and Craig Jordan home runners-up. Last year’s women’s doubles champion Alex Riggall secured another victory in A-grade with her new partner Georgia Pugh, beating expected winners Clare King, her former tennis partner, and Alex’s daughter Olivia Riggall. Kym Bairstow and Michelle Watson made a name for themselves in second place. Adalyn Sharpe and Tea Zizek won the women’s B-grade after claiming five sets and 30 games, with Jessica Caldwell and Katrina Kowald right at their heels with four sets and 28 games. Sunday’s mixed doubles challengers on January 12 saw Zizek and Denby Sharpe shine on the A-grade court, leaving runners-up Rene Oelofse and Sam Lehman in their dust. Annette Cake and Greg Cake conquered 6-3 over Lynda James and Geoff Davidson in mixed doubles B-grade. The juniors descended on the court on January 10, with under-14 mixed winners Denby Sharpe and Dylan Stone playing a spectacular four sets and 24 games, beating Adalyn Sharpe and Zizek on two sets and 17 games. Tied on equal three sets and 21 games, Greta Gethin and Emma Shackley just won over Maggie O’Meehan and Anneliese Slade in the 12-and-under and 14-and-under mixed division. George King and Oscar Lehman were victorious while Jack Riggall and Teddy King came in second-best in the 10-and-under orange ball division. Special awards were given to Laily Wrobel in eight-and-under novice for encouragement, and Jack Lehman for sportsmanship. Ten-and-over competitor Zizek was awarded the composure under pressure and Fernando Gatti received honest line calls.
