A 52-year-old motorist has told police he drove a Ford high-performance car at 153 km/h in the Wheatbelt yesterday to "clear his head".

The Perth man, the sole occupant of the car, was travelling south on Great Northern Highway at 1.38pm when clocked at Wannamal, 130 kilometres south of Dalwallinu.

The posted speed limit is 110 km/h.

When asked to give a reason for his speed, the driver told police: "I was just going out for a drive to clear my head."

Sergeant Russell Evans of Dalwallinu police described the incident as "ridiculous".

"Speed is one of the contributors to serious and fatal crashes in the Wheatbelt district and those are the sort of speeds we're targeting," he said.

"To do that is just irresponsible, especially for a man who is 52 years old."

The driver was fined $1000 and given seven demerits.

Sgt Evans said the driver could easily have been facing a reckless driving charge and car seizure.

Both apply when drivers travel at speeds of 45 km/h above the posted limit.

Meanwhile, another Perth motorist was fined $800 and given six demerits for travelling at 149 km/h at Eneabba yesterday.

The 34-year-old told police he was speeding because he "wanted to get to Geraldton".

Dongara police clocked the man’s Ford sedan as he was travelling on Brand Highway at 3.08pm.

Sergeant Grant Rosman warned that police were actively looking for speeders.

"There's no reason to travel at those sort of speeds," he said.

"We all see what happens, the dire consequences to road users.

"Stick to the limit. We're out there and we will catch you."
