Geraldtonites will get the chance to see the 2015 Cricket World Cup on Monday.

The trophy will be on display for photos between 10am and 6pm at Maitland Park.

Geraldton MLA Ian Blayney said it was a rare opportunity for Geraldton sports lovers to see an international trophy.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to go and see something close up they might not ever get the chance to see again, ” he said.

“Especially for the juniors and the younger people, seeing these things can inspire them.

“You don’t get the chance to see these things very often.”

Travelling on the Cricket World Cup Tour Bus CWS, fans will have the opportunity to have a video taken of themselves with the trophy.

The Cup will be in Kalbarri on Sunday between 11am and 2pm at Nature’s Window, and in Jurien on Tuesday at Dobbyn Park between 11am and 4pm.

Mid West Cricket officer Steven Broberg said he hoped this would encourage people to take up cricket.

“I’m really excited about it, ” he said. “One thing it shows is that we can get some high-profile cricket happening in town.

“(It’s) good to see the cricket community and Geraldton rally behind the Cup to get into town.”

Broberg said the World Cup would give the sport a boost in the town.

“We’re seeing cricket participation steadily increase over a period of time, ” he said.

“I’d love to see our young Geraldton cricketers see the Cup and aspire to one day hold it themselves.”

Australia and New Zealand will host the Cricket World Cup in February and March, with the final in Melbourne.
