A Geraldton driver is lucky to be alive after his utility rolled three times in an effort to avoid hitting a kangaroo.

The man was driving from Mt Magnet to Geraldton on Saturday when he swerved to avoid the animal.

He received minor head injuries as a result of the vehicle rolling over.

Constable Brigham Dennison of Yalgoo Police said the driver was “a very lucky boy” and the incident served as a reminder to all drivers to be aware of animals when travelling on country roads.

Morawa mechanic's car erupts in flames after hitting kangaroos.

“I know it may sound cruel but you’re better off just hitting the animal head on and braking as best you can,” he said.

“Don’t try to swerve off the road because normally that causes you to roll over.

“You may get damage to the vehicle but at least you stay safe.”

Constable Dennison said there was no indication the driver had hit the animal.
