Firefighters were mopping up at the scene of a small fire in sand dunes at Greenough this afternoon.

The fire broke out in wattle near Lucys Beach about 1.30pm.

About six firefighters, including crews from Walkaway and Cape Burney, directed by the City of Greater Geraldton, had brought the blaze under control within about two hours.

The City's acting chief bushfire control officer, Craig Wing, said firefighters were using a 3000 litre appliance, 2000 litre appliance and a light tanker to damp down the site with water and foam.

He said the site may be hot for a few days and asked people to avoid the area.
