Geraldton police have warned of hefty penalties for drug-affected drivers after four motorists allegedly tested positive yesterday.

Police said anyone convicted of driving while impaired by drugs faced a fine of up to $2500 for the first offence and licence disqualification for 10 months.

For a second offence, penalties increase to a fine of up to $3500 or nine months jail, and licence disqualification for at least 30 months.

Further offences attracted a fine of up to $5000 or 18 months jail and permanent loss of licence.

The four drivers allegedly tested positive to cannabis or amphetamines in a police operation at the intersection of Edward and Flores roads, Utakarra.

Police tested 662 drivers.

Police seized one vehicle, issued two infringements, five work orders and a number of cautions.
