Police probe $100k bridge damage
Police are investigating an incident which caused an estimated $100,000 damage to a bridge near Geraldton.
Railing at the Moonyoonooka Bridge on Narra Tarra-Moonyoonooka Road, the main artery for farm heavy vehicle traffic from Chapman Valley to Geraldton, was "significantly" damaged, police said.
Acting Sergeant Keith Burrows of Geraldton police said he became aware of the incident early this morning as he was driving in the area.
He said farm vehicle movements in the area would be hampered as repairs were expected to take some time while new railing was fabricated.
Traffic lights are now in place and the bridge is open for one lane only.
Sgt Burrows said it appeared a vehicle towing an agricultural implement and travelling south had struck the bridge railing.
"For the forseeable future it will have a significant impact on farm vehicle movements, as it will force anyone towing large farming implements to find alternate routes to Geraldton," he said.
"It's not the best time of year for it to happen, with all the seeding and machinery moving around."
Farmers seeking alternative routes are asked to contact Main Roads or Chapman Valley Shire.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Geraldton police on 9923 4555.
