Schools bursting with photographic talent

Photographs of a balloon taken a fraction-of-a-second after it burst and water droplets on a leaf have earned accolades for local high school students.

Geraldton Grammar School Year 10 student, Brooke Maisey, topped the high school category in the Water Corporation Waterwise photo competition for her high-speed image of a water balloon as it burst.

Brooke won a voucher donated by Leederville Camera House after her photo was chosen from 110 entries from across the State.

Nagle Catholic College Year 8 student, Madeline Shearer, was highly commended for her close-up of raindrops on a leaf.

Water Corporation Mid West regional manager, Steve Greeve, congratulated the students and their schools on winning the awards.

He said the competition was part of Water Corporation’s Waterwise Schools Program that assisted teachers to educate students on the need to value, protect and conserve water resources.

“Students are the water users of the future, so it is important schools continue to educate students about the value of water,” Mr Greeve said.

“While we’ll always have enough water — we’ll never have enough to waste — so it’s important the next generation treat water like the precious resource it is.”

The Waterwise Schools Program has been running for 20 years.

Eight Geraldton schools and four from the Abrolhos Islands are registered as Waterwise Schools with Water Corporation.

Beachlands Primary School and Bluff Point Primary School were the first local schools in the program.

They both joined in 2000.
