Town Towers revamp begins
Work has started on developing Geraldton's iconic Town Towers for commercial, retail and residential use, including construction of 40 serviced apartments.
City of Greater Geraldton mayor Shane Van Styn today said the City and the developer had struck an agreement on the project, which included terms of rates concessions and incentives.
The prominent commercial building, built at the corner of Chapman Road and Cathedral Avenue in the 1970s, was occupied by tenants until 2008 but has been vacant since.
A City spokeswoman said updates on construction works and announcements on road closures would be released in coming weeks.
Project manager Grant Pitman said it had been a tough project to get off the ground, but the council's proactive approach and willingness to work alongside the developer helped get the project going.
“We’re extremely excited about the development of Geraldton’s Town Towers and we know the potential this holds for the city,” he said.
“We see a very strong future for Geraldton and we believe this development will only help grow that.”
Mr Van Styn said the developers had worked tirelessly to progress the development and the City was grateful for their investment.
He said the City had a new vision for the CBD and would work with stakeholders, developers and investors to help enhance its vibrancy.
“Revitalisation in our City centre has been a top priority for us and we have already progressed our Foreshore with the finalisation of the West End Revitalisation Project and the progression of Town Towers is the next phase in our bigger plan,” he said.
