Six months on from launching the cat-patio rebate program, GeoCatch officers say they are pleased at the early result, but want to see more built to allow cats outside without being a danger to wildlife.

So far 15 catios have been installed in the region and a total of 33 cat owners have registered for the program.

The program was launched with the aim to give cats an area outside to enjoy — like a patio space — while keeping them away from endangered animals.

GeoCatch have the goal of overseeing the creation of 80 catios over a two year period.

According to GeoCatch, the Busselton area has had the biggest uptake along with properties in the Margaret River, Capel and Donnybrook-Balingup.

GeoCatch project officer Nicole Lincoln said catios were a good way to balance cat needs with environmental responsibility.

“Every catio built helps us reach our conservation goals while keeping your cat safe and happy,” she said.

Owners who install catios under the program are eligible for a $200 rebate to help with the build.

It is hoped with an uptake in catios less cats will kill native wildlife, including the critically endangered western ringtail possum.

Cat owners Leonie and Barry from Vasse recently installed a catio.

“Since installing our catio I see more birds, like blue wrens and honey eaters,” Leonie said.

“Our cat loves looking out from high points in the catio, but can’t get to the birds.”
