Charlie Cameron among first seven members of Indigenous All Stars squad
AFL Indigenous All Stars coach Xavier Clarke is buoyed by the star quality of players ready to commit to the reborn game after premiership star Charlie Cameron was confirmed among the first members of the electric line-up.
Cameron said he hoped the match could “inspire the next generation of Indigenous players” after being named with premiership teammate Callum Ah Chee as well as Bobby and Brad Hill, Michael Walters, Liam Ryan and Kysaiah Pickett.
The match returns having been last played in 2015, with the All Stars to play Fremantle on February 15.
Coached by former St Kilda star Clarke, the team will include even more of the most exciting players in the game, with Dockers recruit Shai Bolton expected to play against his new club in the clash.
“It is exciting to see the calibre of players that are committing to the game,” Clarke said after naming his first batch of players.
“To have the best players available, including a number of premiership players, and have the opportunity to coach them is something I am thrilled to get to do.
“What’s more exciting is this is only the first wave of player announcements and we will have more top players to join the squad in the coming months and can’t wait to put on a great game for fans.”
Cameron said it was an opportunity he wouldn’t miss and hoped the match could have a significant legacy.
“The opportunity to represent the AFL Indigenous All Stars team is extremely special to me, and I am honoured to play alongside the game’s best Indigenous talent,” he said.
“I hope this match will inspire the next generation of Indigenous players to follow their dream of one day playing AFL.”
It will be a second chance for St Kilda’s Brad Hill, having played in the last clash against West Coast in 2015, while veteran Walters said it was a match “I’ve always wanted to play in” despite taking on his own AFL team.
“I was unfortunately injured for the last game in 2015, so I can’t wait to run out with the boys in February,” he said.
“Obviously, with it being here in Perth, hoping to get a good crowd at Optus Stadium and it’ll be great to be around the Indigenous stars of the competition.”
