Sandi Matic wins bail and cop warning to not push ahead with new court challenge over stalking charge

Technology entrepreneur and alleged stalker Sandi Matic has been warned to not push ahead with a new bid to stop Perth Magistrates Court hearing his charge. Magistrate Belinda Coleman told Mr Matic by video link to Hakea Prison that he risked abusing the court’s processes if he challenged the court’s jurisdiction given he had made a similar application in the past. The new challenge to the court’s authority was revealed while Mr Matic was before Magistrate Coleman successfully seeking bail after being arrested and locked up in Hakea last week. He was arrested on a warrant issued when he missed a Perth Magistrates Court appointment last Tuesday. The appointment was to set a new hearing date for a charge that he stalked a woman in South Perth over six days in September 2019. He was also due to appear on a charge of breaching bail earlier this year. Mr Matic has been representing himself in his legal battles, including in defending the stalking charge and unrelated Supreme Court injunction application being run by high profile western suburbs real estate agent Vivien Yap. He unsuccessfully challenged the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction to hear Ms Yap’s action arising from his manner of complaining about her sale of his owner-built Mt Claremont home in 2021. He is now unrepresented while fighting civil and criminal contempt charges laid by Ms Yap’s lawyers in the Supreme Court. But specialist criminal lawyer Rhett Williamson represented Mr Matic for his bail hearing on Monday morning. Mr Williamson told Magistrate Coleman that Mr Matic was working in technology and supporting two young children. He said his charges were called on at 9.30am last Tuesday, whereas Mr Matic had been told they would be called at 2.15pm. Magistrate Coleman said this did not accord with the court’s records. “There has been so many times when Mr Matic has failed to attend court,” she said. She said he had recently filed a change of plea of form but had incorrectly used it to challenge the court’s jurisdiction. She ruled he could be released if he and a surety provided bail of $5000 each and he agreed to report to Wembley police station three times a week. Mr Matic cannot be moved from his current Floreat address without the court’s permission. His stalking charging hearing is set down for hearing on February 13 and February 14. His Supreme Court row is back before Justice Marcus Solomon on October 27.
