A man has been arrested after allegedly breaking into a Mandurah home and bashing an elderly resident in his sleep.

Police say the 75-year-old man woke to a man assaulting him in the face and head at his home on Leslie Street, Dudley Park, about 2am on Saturday.

The intruder — aged in his 20s — fled on foot with a set of car and house keys.

A police spokesperson on Saturday afternoon confirmed the man had been arrested and was assisting police with inquiries.

No charges have been laid.
