Turkey frees Syrian singer Omar Souleyman

Internationally renowned Syrian singer and DJ Omar Souleyman has been released by Turkish authorities following a two-day detention over alleged terrorism links.

"There was a short investigation and then he was let go," Souleyman's manager, Mina Tosti, told the DPA news agency.

Souleyman had been held by the police in the southeastern city of Sanliurfa since Wednesday.

He was accused of links to the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a designated terrorist group that has been waging a decades-long insurgency inside Turkey, Tosti said.

The 55-year-old Souleyman is known for his unique mix of techno and folklore typical of the Middle East. He has performed in Turkey and several other countries.
