Dome collapse a setback for concrete silo project
A 42-metre high inflatable dome used in the construction of a cement storage silo in Adelaide has collapsed.
The Hallett Group says no one was hurt in the incident at Port Adelaide on Thursday, describing it as a setback but not the end of the project.
The company says it is working with the manufacturer of the inflatable skin to investigate the fault.
The skin of the dome is the outer formwork for the main structure made from 17,000 tonnes of concrete and 2000 tonnes of steel.
When complete the silo will store up to 52,000 tonnes of cement.
The construction technique had been used successfully more than 2000 times around the world, the Hallett Group said.
"While the structure's collapse is a step backwards, Hallett will complete the investigation, correct the issues and proceed with the project as soon as practical," a statement said.
