$12,500 raised for prostate cancer charity as over-35s play in season’s first Mid West AFL Masters Carnival

A total of $12,500 was raised as over-35s got their boots on for the first Mid West AFL Masters Carnival of the season, and one mighty mullet was cut. The AFL Masters Carnival on May 20 saw Batavia Mariners invite the Mighty Blues, Northampton and Dongara and a Warriors/Perth Metro All-Stars side. Players weren’t just there for a fun day out on the field, and many could be seen in blue socks as the teams got together to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. In all, $2500 was raised on the day, while $10,000 was raised in the weeks before, and the day of matches finished off with the immaculate mullet of Mariners player Warren “Blowie” Blow being shaved off. Sport is an important space for letting men be in an environment where they feel they can talk about their problems to friends, whether that’s health, work or even just a pet peeve, said organiser and Mariners player Brad Fehlauer. “When you’re in a team, you get behind each other,” Fehlauer said. “Whether that is by just having a chat on the side of the footy, helping them at their house if they’re injured or hurt, and support their families if they are getting treatments, whatever it might be.” The next AFL Masters Carnival will be held on June 24 and hosted by the Mighty Blues.
