All set for the 27th running of the Mullewa Golden Bowl, one of the region’s most coveted bowls events

Mullewa Bowling Club will host the last official open event of the 2021-22 Batavia Bowling League season this weekend, with the 27th running of the Golden Bowl. Last year’s two-day carnival attracted 14 sides, and club secretary Terry Koltasz has announced this year’s event has 15 confirmed with one side withdrawing because of a COVID-related issue. The event, which started in 1994, has historically reached a capacity field, with the first edition held at the original clubhouse off the Geraldton-Mullewa Road to this day a record with 28 teams attending. The Northampton Bowling Club duo of Dale Maver and Norm Cowan will continue their long-time support of the Golden Bowl with the pair attending 26 and 23 years respectively including this 27th edition. The record of five consecutive Golden Bowl victories by Mullewa legends Lloyd Morgan and Nino Messina goes on the line with the pair looking to extend the record, which even now looks impossible to be repeated. Last year they joined Brad King (four wins in five years) and Jon Trotter in a six-match undefeated run, with the quartet amassing a massive 61 shots up. Mullewa Farm Supplies will celebrate its 21st year of association and sponsorship of the Mullewa Club and the Golden Bowl, with owner Glenn Bryant delighted with the 2022 edition which again includes support by Isuzu Geraldton and Bendigo Bank along with no less than 14 other event sponsors. The Mullewa Club has a great Golden Bowl history with fantastic sponsorship, quality catering and a well-orchestrated event, all connecting to make the two-day tournament one of the region’s most coveted events.
