Plans for a tribute to Justyce Potaka-Kumeroa are being discussed by the Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association as the basketball fraternity comes to grips with the loss of one of its brightest stars.

Potaka-Kumeroa died at the age of 17 on Christmas Eve when the gold Nissan Tiida he was driving struck a tree on Marine Terrace in the West End about 11am.

He was a bright basketball prospect playing for the Olympians and was part of their championship-winning team last year as well as representing the Mid West at the State Championships and signing on for the Buccs.

He was also a handy footballer playing colts for Chapman Valley and Northampton, though according to his mum Marere Ihe Rangi his first love was basketball.

Basketball was his life, she said.

“He loved playing and he loved training. He wanted nothing more but to travel the world and to play his sport,” she said.

“Justyce said ‘I want to travel everywhere and I want to play basketball. I want to come home and tell you about all the places I have seen and all the things I have done’.”

Beyond his sporting exploits most seemed to remember Potaka-Kumeroa for his infectious smile and his gentle, kind manner.

Olympians Basketball Club said his loss will be felt on and off the court.

“We will miss watching him take the court with his well-known cheeky smile and bounce in his step,” they said.

“Justyce was a presence both on and off the court, always motivating his team members and always taking the time to inspire the younger players.”

“Forever in our hearts.”

The GABA season is scheduled to return on Monday, January 16 with the association saying plans are being discussed on a way to honour Potaka-Kumeroa.

“We have discussed some ideas,” a spokesperson said.

“Lots of people are away so we haven’t confirmed anything as yet but we’re also making sure anything we do is in line with the family’s wishes.”

A memorial was held at the crash scene to honour Potaka-Kumeroa on Boxing Day.

A GoFundMe which was set up to raise funds for his funeral passed its $20,000 goal on Wednesday and donations are still open.
