Fire from an electrical fault burned down part of the building just before 3.30am on December 22, 2017, with fire crews able to put out the blaze before it engulfed its western side.
The family-owned company still manufactures and stores Golden West Ice and operates Golden West Logistics from the standing buildings, and was able to move back into them in July 2019.
A company spokesman said it took the local business “a few years” to get ice production and its transport arm running at close to full capacity, but shortly afterwards the COVID-19 pandemic hit and caused further industry disruption, pushing back progress on the site’s recovery.
He said cyclone Seroja in April also hastened the business’ clean-up efforts as management didn’t want to risk debris causing damage during future weather events.
While the Geraldton Fish Market’s trade has been on hold since the fire, the company has been able to expand its Malaga depot and is back to manufacturing and delivering ice across the south of WA as well as transporting groceries by December 2017.
Geraldton Fish Market operated from its Marine Terrace site from 1985 and it is still owned by member of the Lodge family.
