Charter operators in Mid West to catch more rock lobster after successful trial in West Coast bioregion

More opportunities for tourists seeking the thrill of catching and cooking fresh lobster will soon be available with licensed charter operators allowed to fish for more stock permanently from December. In a move to boost regional tourism in the Mid West, the State Government will set permanent arrangements that doubles the amount of pots charter operators are allowed on board. Under new rules, which will be introduced from December 1, licensed charter operators between Kalbarri and Augusta will be allowed 12 pots on board and a total of 80 western rock lobster. Originally, the charters were allowed up to six pots and 24 lobster at each tour. A daily bag limit of eight lobster for individuals still applies. Charter operators were given the opportunity to fish under the new arrangements over a four-year trial, resulting in more interest in tours from national and international visitors. It resulted in an increase of about 5000 to more than 13,000 participants between 2019 and 2023. Geraldton and the Abrolhos Islands were the most popular destinations for tours, next to Dongara, Kalbarri, Two Rocks and Mandurah. Fisheries Minister Don Punch said western rock lobster is iconic for the Mid West region and the decision would allow tourists to enjoy the seafood locally and enhance charter experiences. “The changes to the fishing rules mean charter businesses can provide a unique lobster tourism experience from the ‘pot to the plate’ which will be a great drawcard to grow tourism in the regions, support local businesses and create new jobs,” he said. “Charter passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy lobster on board as well as take a few home to enjoy with family and friends.” The announcement allows charter operators to set pots in the region before the tour, but pots can only be pulled during the tour.
