As we approach Christmas and the end of 2022, it is an opportune time to reflect on the year but also what must be our focus over the next 12 months.

This year has seen COVID spread through our community and unprecedented pressure on our health system. For the first time we have seen ambulance ramping become prominent in regional WA as hospitals struggled to cope, including Geraldton, which has ramped emergency ambulances for almost 150 hours.

Sadly, the redevelopment of the Geraldton Regional Hospital, a key election commitment almost six years ago by the McGowan Labor Government, has not progressed beyond a new carpark at a time when improved health services have been in high demand. A firm timeline and commitment is needed to assure the community that this project will be delivered, albeit after the next election.

For many impacted by severe tropical cyclone Seroja, recovery in 2022 has been slow. I have met so many that have shared their experience, their despair and often their hopelessness. The Government’s recovery package is rapidly becoming the second disaster to hit the region with less than $7 million of the $104.5 million landmark response hitting the ground.

It should not need saying but please drive safely this holiday season. Spare a thought for our emergency service and health care workers, many of whom are volunteers in our region who will continue to serve our community 24/7 while we enjoy time with family and friends.
