Cirque Nouvelle prepares to bring circus theatrics to Geraldton with regional touring a focus for producers

Geraldton will be the latest destination for an evening of circus entertainment when Cirque Nouvelle hits the Queens Park Theatre stage on April 9. The internationally acclaimed performance will be at the QPT with a multi-talented line-up of circus performers from WA and NSW. Producer Rebecca Capener said the show debuted last year and sold out shows in Mandurah and Kalgoorlie, prompting them to expand to more regional locations. “I’m a born and bred Kalgoorlie girl, so we have a real soft spot for regional towns. I love bringing it back to those really appreciative places. The cities get it all but the regions tend to be skimmed over,” she said. Capener’s husband James has co-produced the show with her while working on cruise ships and travelling the world with their dual juggling act. Performers have combined their acrobatic, juggling, aerial, contortion and Cyr wheel talents to create the show remotely from their respective gigs across Australia. The show explores the theme of old versus new and how circus has changed throughout history from the classic “big top” style to theatrical-based modern performances using technology, lighting and contemporary costumes. Capener said the ringmaster would take the audience on a journey throughout the show, exploring the ways in which circus performance has evolved. The 6pm show sold out, prompting the addition of a 2.30pm matinee performance. “We were at schools in Mullewa and Walkaway last year and they seemed to really enjoy it. We’ve always wanted to come to Geraldton,” Capener said.
