City of Greater Geraldton calling for public feedback ahead of new Disability Access and Inclusion Plan

The City of Greater Geraldton is seeking public feedback as part of a review of its disability access and inclusion plan. The existing plan was formed back in 2019 and its five-year tender is coming to an end, now the City is looking for public review for what to change or add in the new plan. Part of the commitment to help make the City more accessible was seen last year when the City of Greater Geraldton teamed up with Rocky Bay to deliver communication boards at local playgrounds to help create an inclusive environment for children with speaking difficulties. Looking ahead, Mayor Shane Van Styn said the review would help look at what needed to be improved with the upcoming plan. “Over the past four years the City has refurbished buildings, renewed and constructed kilometres of footpaths, installed ACROD parking bays and built new toilet blocks to improve facilities and make public open spaces more accessible,” he said. “We’ve come a long way, but we need input from people with disability, their families and friends, carers, disability service providers and the broader community about what still needs to be done. “Access and inclusion are top priorities for the City and community feedback will help us determine which improvements need to be included in future budgets.” Locals who live with a disability, care for or know someone with a disability, are encouraged to have their say on the community survey which is open until July 24, www.surveymonkey.com/r/GeroDAIP2023. The 2019-23 DIAB had 148 community and City staff members give feedback and input to help shape the plan. A community workshop will be held to reveal the results of the survey on Wednesday, August 9 at the Civic Centre.
