City of Greater Geraldton council approves $5 million for Spalding Regional Renewal Project

A plan for a number of upgrades, refurbishments and new paths and roads in Spalding is set to proceed after being given the seal of approval by Greater Geraldton’s council.

The Spalding Regional Renewal Project is part of a $20 million plan announced by the State Government for a number of suburban revitalisation projects throughout regional WA cities.

The Spalding project will see upgrades made to AMC Park, the demolition of a bus shelter and the construction of three road connections and extensions, and a footpath, near the Mitchell Street Community Centre.

A motion to authorise the spending of just over $5 million for the project was put forward at council’s meeting on Tuesday and approved unanimously.

Councillor Steve Cooper said the project would have important benefits for Spalding.

“Importantly, the upgrades acknowledge the local community’s history, culture and aspirations,” he said.

Councillor Michael Reymond said it would improve the value of local properties, and discourage crime and antisocial behaviour.

“This suburb is in need of an upgrade of high standards for its residents,” he said.

Work is set to begin on the project this month.

A total of $9 million is set to be spent on the project, with funding coming from the Department of Communities, and with grants also potentially being given by Lotterywest.
