City of Greater Geraldton fifth-most popular regional hotspot for internal migration, according to report

Greater Geraldton is still high on the radar for people looking for a sea change, being the fifth-most popular regional city for Australians to move to across the nation, according to data from Commonwealth Bank of Australia customers. The Regional Movers Index recorded a 158 per cent increase in population from internal migration in Greater Geraldton in the 12 months to December. It was the only local government area to have made the top five previously, topping the list in June 2023 and coming in second last quarter. Of those who moved to Geraldton, 26.2 per cent of people moved from other States, while 73.8 per cent moved from within WA. The report says growth was fairly evenly distributed between regional and capital inflows, while its quarterly growth rate stood at 42 per cent. The greatest share of movers came from Perth. Briony Bray moved to Geraldton in September to take on the role of Geraldton Regional Art Gallery co-ordinator at the City of Greater Geraldton. Originally from Perth’s Hills, the 22-year-old was working at a Kalamunda art gallery before making the move to the Mid West. Aside from following her career dreams, Ms Bray escaped the metropolitan area to immerse herself in a slower-paced environment. “I moved here for a great job opportunity, that seems to be a big influence on people moving here. But the reason people should stay is for all the great activities and events around town, the nice beaches, and the better work-life balance,” she said. “It does feel a lot more relaxed here, and I can finish my day with a walk along the beach.” Ms Bray bought her first home in Geraldton — partly because of the lack of available rentals on the market — but also because it was, surprisingly, more affordable than Perth. She said she did not regret the decision, and was enjoying her new lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle. “Geraldton is a great location and a great place for a sea change. The town pretty much has everything you need, including a welcoming community,” she said. “Having less people and less traffic is brilliant, and everything feels really close.”
