City of Greater Geraldton hosts Women on Wheels event to celebrate International Women's Day in style

The City of Greater Geraldton rolled into International Women’s Day celebrations with the inaugural Women on Wheels event on Sunday morning. The event which began opposite the Geraldton Yacht Club, invited the women of Geraldton to hop on their wheels of choice and follow the foreshore footpath at a leisurely pace. Bikes, scooters and rollerskates gathered in their masses — some decorated in flowers — to acknowledge the contribution of women to the broader community. Girls of all ages and abilities were welcomed, with deputy mayor Natasha Colliver attending with her granddaughter, Freya. “There’s two reasons today is important,” Cr Colliver said. “We’re celebrating International Women’s Day and all the important women in our lives, and active transport options, active participation. It’s a fantastic day, fantastic turn out and fantastic weather.” Cr Colliver said the energy from the crowd was infectious and there was obvious excitement. About 150 people attended the event, dressed in their best tutus and novelty sunglasses, riding bikes decorated with flowers, tinsel and tassels in a true display of femininity. Mums on roller-skates pushing prams and toddlers on scooters and three-wheel bikes were a clear indicator of the commitment to the celebration, welcoming wheels of all shapes and sizes. The event encouraged those on wheels to go at their own pace, have fun and take selfie breaks when necessary. Coffee and cakes were provided to participants free of charge at the end of the event, using local providers to help cater.
