City of Greater Geraldton investigates green waste fire that caused Mullewa Transfer Station to close

The cause of a fire that led to the Mullewa rubbish tip being closed on Tuesday is being investigated by the City of Greater Geraldton. On Tuesday, July 18 Department of Fire and Emergency Services received a triple-0 call at 1.30am on Tuesday reporting heavy smoke coming from the Mullewa Transfer Station, located on Carnarvon-Mullewa Road. Fire crews from Mullewa Central Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade and located a large pile of green waste on fire which was extinguished by water. The City of Greater Geraldton closed the site while DFES crews brought the fire under control and remained closed due to smoke restricting vision at the site. A DFES spokesperson confirmed crews monitored the area to ensure embers did not reignite and the cause of the blaze was yet to be determined. The site was reopened on Thursday. The City thanked the community for their patience during the closure and continue to investigate the cause surrounding the blaze.
