Competitive field contested 27th running of the Mullewa Golden Bowl
The 27th running of the two-day Mullewa Golden Bowl was another resounding success, with the event again attracting a capacity field with players travelling from as far north as Dampier.
Those taking to the rink were competing for one of the richest purses on offer within the Mid West’s Batavia League.
The stand-out from the six matches was the Geraldton foursome of Brian Wright, Phil Christensen, Dave Hunt and Noel Davey, who retained an undefeated status over the two days, with an average winning margin of 13 shots in the return of plus 78 shots.
Second place with five wins plus 53 shots was the team skippered by four-time winner of the carnival Vince Knight, and including John Sims, Luke Malone and Peter Adshead — the latter two of whom travelled 12 hours from the Dampier Bowling Club.
Former junior State representative Aiden McAuliffe guided former coach Chris Caldwell, along with father and brother, Anthony and Regan McAuliffe, into third position with four wins just ahead on percentage from Peter Reudavey, Glenn Bryant, John Schagen and Demtrios Christophorou, also with four wins and an identical plus 29 shots. Just 0.11 per cent separated the two teams at play’s end.
Fifth place went to the quartet of Jon Trotter, Craig Walker, Nino Messina and Lloyd Morgan with four wins plus 22 shots, three shots clear of Colin Johnson, Keith Vince, Phil May and Ric Culshaw in sixth position with four wins plus 17 shots.
The event awarded prizes for play on both Saturday and Sunday, with Geraldton’s Gary Smith, Rolf Schreyvogel, Bill Perry and Bob Nicholas and Bom Maver, Wes Jones, Neville Simmons and Joe Criddle the respective winners.
The Golden Bowl was the final open event on the calendar, with the carnival season set to take centre stage throughout May and June.
Denison, Wonthella, Geraldton and Northampton each have multiple events on the fixture in coming weeks, with players urged to get nominations into the respective venue to avoid disappointment.
The Mullewa Golden Bowl continued its tremendous run with sponsorship, with Mullewa Farm Supplies again leading the way as the major supporter following some two decades of association with the club.
Isuzu Geraldton, GOPP Geraldton and the Bendigo Bank joined as silver supporters with the bronze level including Afgri, Independent Rural, Mitchell and Brown, Nutrient Ag Solutions, Purcher International, Refuel Australia, Great Southern Fuels, Elders Geraldton, Optima Lime along with Lara Dalton MLA and Shane Love MLA.
Event organisers, husband and wife duo of Terry and Kerry Koltasz, praised the continued support from sponsors, supporters, members and players along with the efforts from caterers throughout the weekend, which helped achieve another successful running of the club’s major tournament.
