Crime Prevention Expo: Local businesses and Geraldton Police hold expo to reduce crime and boost security

Geraldton Police have joined forces with businesses who stock security equipment to provide advice and demonstrate their latest products at the expo on Wednesday night. Geraldton Police office-in-charge Sen. Sgt Russell Hurst said one in three burglaries in Geraldton was opportunistic and community awareness was crucial in curbing crime. “We just want to work with the community to target harden their premises,” he said. “This is an opportunity for local businesses to work with our community and police to identify strategies to prevent these crimes. “We want to make sure our vulnerable victims are engaged, the elderly, young families, anyone who may fall subject to crime attends these events.” Incite Security manager Peter Budd said there would be security systems and CCTV on display for attendees to better understand how the technology operated. “There’s a lot going on out there, the police push owning CCTV a bit and it certainly helps them out by having it,” he said. Security Co manager Zacc Cross said more people in Geraldton could benefit from security doors, windows and roller shutters in their homes. “It’s great for summer, you can just lock your screen door and open your windows and your house is going to be nice and secure,” he said. “We’ve been flat out for two years, there’s a lot of people getting it but there’s still a lot of houses without it as well.” Geraldton Lock & Key manager John Moody said there would be a variety of locks and safes on display and the team would answer any questions. “There’s a lot of things — commercial and residential — that people aren’t aware of,” he said. “The very first thing we tell a customer is to lock their door, that’s by far the most proactive thing to do, and then upgrading your locks always helps.” Geraldton Police will also provide advice for seniors on how to apply for a $400 State Government safety and security rebate. The expo will be held at the QEII Centre from 6pm to 8pm.
