Eilene Doris George: Pregnant Geraldton woman released on bail after destruction spree in city centre

A pregnant Geraldton woman has been released on bail after pleading guilty to going on a damage spree in the city’s main strip earlier this year. Eilene Doris George had spent eight weeks in custody on charges that came about from a destructive rampage that occurred in the city centre on January 13. The damage included smashed windows at Midwest Optical and Tanti’s restaurant, damage to table pottery at Piper Lane cafe, damaging a Subaru hatchback and behaving in a disorderly matter. Lawyer Kate Summers told the court Ms George previously did not want to be considered for bail. Magistrate Angus Hockton supported this statement by saying this was the “behaviour of someone who wants to be put in custody”. After spending eight weeks in custody, the court was told it seemed the 14-weeks pregnant Ms George had turned over a new leaf. “She does seem to be motivated given the pregnancy,” Mr Hockton said. “It does appear you’ve turned a bit of a corner and have support.” Mr Hockton decided to place Ms George on bail, on the basis of her returning to a supportive situation. “Provide a good environment for your baby,” he said. She will appear again in court on May 15.
