FIFO worker Brooke McIntosh stops in Geraldton during 1600km mental health run from Karratha to Perth

A young FIFO worker will run 1600km, passing at least 12 blue trees in support of mental health in the mining industry, and is calling out local organisations to get involved when she arrives in Geraldton. Brooke McIntosh, 27, works in the mining industry and understands the toll fly-in, fly-out work can take on a person’s mental health. To raise awareness, Ms McIntosh is embarking on a 27-day run from Karratha to Perth, aiming to arrive in Geraldton next week. Raising more than $40,000 for 20Talk and Blue Tree Project already, she’s calling for the Geraldton community to come down and support her, as well as businesses and organisations that share the same mental health concerns. Ms McIntosh hopes to meet with the community and talk about mental health near AJ’s Beach Cafe when she arrives in Geraldton around Friday, September 8. Setting off from the Blue Tree in Dampier on August 20, the runner plans to complete her journey at the Blue Tree in City Beach. Ms McIntosh will aim to cover 60-70km a day with a support crew, van and supplies, tearing through seven pairs of shoes. She will sleep on the side of the road for 28 nights and run without headphones or music the entire way. She wants to help reduce the shocking suicide rates within the industry, which according to the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute, is 25 people per 100,000 men working in mining. Ms McIntosh is running to encourage others to speak up about their mental health concerns and overcome the stigma she believes still exists in the industry. “We lose over 200 people a year to suicide on site in the mining and construction industry,” she said. “In addition to this we lost 322 young adolescents in 2021. They haven’t experienced the complete beauty of this world, to me, this is not OK.” Registered mental health education charity 20Talk is focused on youth and regional mental health, including in the mining sector, while Blue Tree Project aims to get people speaking up about their mental health by dotting blue trees across Australia, with more than 30 painted across the Mid West-Gascoyne region.
