‘Fortunate no one was injured’: large tree crushes Kia Hatchback near St Lawrence’s Primary School

A big tree branch crushed a car across the road from a Geraldton primary school on Wednesday afternoon during school pick-up hours.

No one was injured after the tree smashed the front of a Kia Hatchback on Greenville Drive about 3.15pm while the owner was picking up their kids from St Lawrence’s Primary School.

Principal David Tunchon said the carpark area next to the Lighthouse Memorial was regularly used by parents dropping off and collecting students.

“Other cars were parked around it with families around so we were very lucky,” he said.

“It was very fortunate that no one was injured — it was really windy.

“There was also a swarm of bees. I went over to check it out and the next thing I know these bees are attacking me.”

Mr Tunchon notified the City of Greater Geraldton, while police checked no one was injured.

The debris was cleared the next day, with arborists giving the tree a significant trim.

Mr Tunchon said similar trees on the property were checked by an arborist annually. “If there’s one looking dodgy we will get it trimmed, which is very important,” he said. “I hope the council are doing that as well.”
