Geraldton Brazilian jiujitsu team win swag of medals at WA championships

Team Geraldton made an impact at the Western Australia Jiu Jitsu Championship with 11 competitors by winning a swag of medals.

The team cleaned up at the podium, collectively earning two gold medals, three silver medals and four bronze medals on Sunday, July 21.

Annette Ash made an impressive debut in the white belt division, claiming the State title in her first bout of competition.

The grey belt kids’ division was taken out by Indee Johnson, who won the State championship with a controlled match.

Bailey Kempton, returning as a blue belt this year, earned bronze after a hard-fought battle. Bailey fell behind in points early on but managed to get ahead, coming close to a submission in the end.

In their first competitive outings, Mikayla Collins and Lincoln Ash each claimed a bronze medal. John McGee also impressed in his debut competition.

Competing in both his weight class and the open division, Rob Smith earnt silver and bronze respectively in the blue belt category.

Sejer Ash impressed in the purple belt division, securing second place after a tough match against an experienced opponent.

Coach Israel Riberio commended the athletes for their commitment and performance on the day.

“Our goal in competition is always to get better at jiujitsu,” he said.

“The time and effort our athletes put in, considering their personal and family commitments, is truly commendable.”
