Geraldton Buccaneers split road trip double-header to start season

The Geraldton Buccaneers split their road trip double-header in a tough start to the season at the weekend.

The Buccs faced-off against the Joondalup Wolves at Arena Joondalup on Saturday, the game forced into overtime with the final scores tied at 98 apiece.

A back and forth affair saw neither team able to break clear for a win in normal time. The Buccs were unable to hold off Joondalup in overtime, going down by four points, 111-107.

New import Akeem Springs got his season started with an impressive performance, scoring 32 points, along with 11 rebounds and two steals.

Johny Narkle also got away to a flyer with 28 points and eight rebounds, while Buccs’ centre Liam Hunt chalked up 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Buccs bounced back the next day when they took on the Eastern Suns.

Hunt shone, finishing his night with 19 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.

Springs led the scoring for the Buccs, with 21 points and four boards while Narkle also weighed in with 18 points, 10 boards, six assists and two steals.

It was an all-round effort from the Buccs with Joshua Keyes chipping in with an important 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists, with off-season signing Verle Williams contributing five points, four boards, three steals and two assists.

The Bucss ran over the top of Kalamunda winning 78-67.

The Buccaneers return home for their first game at Activewest Stadium on April 12 where they will host the Perth Redbacks.
