The Greater Geraldton council is considering offering another term to HMAS Sydney II warden Peter “Spike” Jones.

Mr Jones took over in 2022 from then-warden Don Rolston after 13 years of service, beginning a two-year term.

His term was alongside deputy Warren Nathan, with both indicating they would be interested in extending their term beyond the original date of November 19, 2024.

City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said the role was important.

“It’s a bit of a sounding block and it’s a status role,” he said.

“He works in collaboration with the city, the tour guides and all other bodies who have an interest in the Sydney II memorial site.

“Coming from a naval background, he’s the perfect person for the position.”

According to the council agenda forum, the role also includes informing the city of any maintenance needed at the site and helping co-ordinate approval for requests from ex-service organisations looking to honour the men of HMAS Sydney II.

The council is set to vote on whether to extend both of their terms to November 19, 2026.
