Geraldton cricket round 10: Women’s to play in first night-time matches in league history
History will be made at Wonthella Oval on Saturday when, for the first time, women’s club cricket will be played under lights.
The Young Motors Women’s Cricket League T20 between Chapman Valley-Northampton and Towns starts at 6pm.
Other than during the 2018 State Country Cricket Championships, women’s night cricket has not been played in Geraldton.
CVN co-captain Jess Wilson said her players were delighted to be pioneers.
“We’re pumped, I think it will be an awesome experience and something we look forward to doing more of in coming years,” Wilson said.
“We expect to have our men’s A and B-grade sides along with family and friends to watch another step in developing our women’s cricket.”
CVN have had a difficult summer though a tie against an admittedly underpowered Wanderers was huge and they have won two previous games against Towns.
Their shining light has been Cricketer of the Year contender, Kylie Bremner with 255 runs at 42.50 and 14 wickets at seven.
“If Kylie was to win Cricketer of the Year, it would be a massive boost for our morale,” Wilson said.
“She always wants to improve her knowledge and skills and be a better player and others in our team can see what hard work and dedication can do.”
The other women’s game between Wanderers and Sportsmans is also a T20 at GBSC Park.
They met last week in a 30-over game and though Wanderers won, Sportsmans have another opportunity to probe for chinks in Wanderers’ considerable armour.
In men’s cricket, Towns and Bluff Point have double duty with a clash on Friday night in the Young Motors T20 Series and again on Saturday in a 50-overs-a-side Bendigo Bank Cricket League game at Muir Park.
The other 50-over game between Sportsmans and CVN at Wonthella has been postponed until February 18 as many of the players will be in Perth for the Pakistan Test.
