Geraldton fight until very end as u-15 boys fell to Australind in State Basketball Championships grand final

The under-15 boys Geraldton side fell just short of glory in the State Championships after going down to Australind in the grand final. In the weekend’s round of games of the basketball State championships, which have been running for the past few weeks, Geraldton’s two sides competed over Saturday and Sunday with the u-15 boys losing 39-16 to Australind. In the under-11 girls, the Geraldton side competed in division three where they put up a solid performance going 2-2-1 in their five games. After falling to Mandurah in the first round, the Buccaneers girls grabbed a 22-13 win over Warwick before losing to Busselton in their final game on Saturday. They rounded out the tournament on Sunday with a 20-4 win over Willetton and a 6-6 draw to Perth, but their record wasn’t enough to get them into the finals. In the u-15 boy’s category, the Geraldton side dominated in division two, winning all four of their games to finish top of the pool. The highlights included their first match against Willetton, where Max De San Miguel and Riley Fong dropped 14 points in the win, and the round four 31-point blowout against Lakeside. In the semifinal, they faced East Perth, who also went 4-0 in their pool games, and came away with a 35-22 win. Geraldton’s grand final match-up came against the Australind All Stars, who got out to a quick start in the match and took possession early. The All Stars managed to go on a 7-0 run before Trevor Farrell dished it off to De San Miguel for Geraldton’s first score. The Buccs continued to struggle scoring in the game, managing just four points to Australind’s 21 in the first half. While Geraldton managed to put up points in the second half, they couldn’t keep up as Australind ran away to score a 39-16 victory. De San Miguel and Fong contributed to Geraldton’s score with nine and seven points respectively.
