Geraldton Gold Cup wrap: Locals triumph with cup and plate victories at Geraldton Turf Club

Bambun Boy was the toast of Geraldton Turf Club’s marquee event of the season with an all-the-way win in Sunday’s Geraldton Gold Cup.
It was a local showdown as both marquee races, the 1400m Abrolhos Plate and 2100m Geraldton Gold Cup, were taken out by local trainers.

The main race of the day, race seven the Geraldton Gold Cup, saw a stunning run by Susan Olive’s Bambun Boy who led from start to finish over the 2100m run.
Brandon Louis rode the seven-year-old gelding to perfection out of barrier 11 asserting their dominance from the jump.
Bambun Boy brought it home for the Gold Front Thoroughbreds stable, taking out the lion’s share of the $125,000 prize pool and adding the Geraldton Gold Cup to the trophy cabinet.
In the Abrolhos Plate it was local trainer Alby Bowtell who claimed the plate with five-year-old Collective paired with jockey Austin Galati.

The Bowtell mare ran a strong race as it held middle of the pack before going ballistic at the 400m mark and winning the $50,000 Plate by two lengths.
The local product got the better of race favourite, Dan and Ben Pearce’s Soso Lucky, ridden by Tash Faithfull, who held onto the back of Collective before a home straight effort that wasn’t quite enough, finishing second.
The majority of the eight races were won by local trainers.
Performers on the day included jockey Lisa Staples who took home a double on Willie Parker and Kim Anderson horses, as well as Faithfull who claimed a double with the Pearce Brothers in race one and Ron Cowl in race eight.
Parker also claimed a double in races three and five, with Shasheno and Luckee Floran.
