Geraldton police encourage anonymous reporting of suspicious behaviour through Eyes on the Street app

Geraldton Police are encouraging the community to download a mobile app designed to help report suspicious behaviour easily and anonymously as part of their campaign against organised crime. The Eyes on The Street app is a user-friendly way for the public to report suspicious activity quickly, easily and anonymously. The information-gathering app is a tool that assists police fit the missing piece of a puzzle by allowing everyday people to be the eyes and ears in the community without filing a police report. The Eyes on the Street campaign was originally created for industry personnel, including security guards, Shire rangers, taxi drivers, couriers, hotel and airport staff or mining workers, to easily report when they come across suspicious behaviour on a regular basis, but has since expanded to everyone in the community. Drug activity, family violence, wanted people, cybercrime, theft, firearms or vandalism can all be reported on the app, with the option to include photo, video evidence or a description of a suspicious person. Users have the option to provide their details to the police or remain anonymous. Mid West-Gascoyne youth policing Sergeant Michael Hall said everyone should download the app and report suspicious behaviour, particularly when it happened close to home. “We can be there, we can get the information, but at the end of the day, it’s everyone else that’s out there that sees what’s going on,” he said. “When you look at the definition of suspicious, it’s anything that’s out of the ordinary. If you know what goes on in your street, you know who your neighbours are, and then all of a sudden you’ve got cars rocking up at all hours of the night then you know that’s not ordinary behaviour, there’s something going on there. “You might think it’s not very big, but that might be the missing piece that connects to five other reports and altogether results in quite substantial information.” Geraldton police will be hosting a community event on Tuesday, September 19 at the QEII Community Centre from 9.30am as part of their They’ll Never Know campaign with a focus on organised crime syndicates involved in the illicit drug trade.
