Geraldton Police Station joins in WA tribute to slain South Australian officer with flags at half mast

Geraldton Police on Friday joined stations across the nation in lowering flags to half mast after a South Australian police officer was shot dead during a violent confrontation on Thursday night. Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig, 53, and his colleagues were called to a rural property in Senior near the Victorian border in the State’s southeast about 11.20pm when he died in the line of duty. An armed man confronted the officers and shot Mr Doig dead. Another officer Michael Hutchinson was shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries while a third officer, Rebekah Cass, was uninjured. SA Police said the male suspect was shot by police and sustained serious life-threatening injuries. Officers at Geraldton Police Station, and stations around the Mid West-Gascoyne District, lowered their flags to half mast on Friday in solidarity, joining South Australia as they mourn the loss of a fellow officer in the blue family. WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch extended his “deepest condolences” to the officer’s family, friends and colleagues. Mr Blanch had contacted SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens on Friday. “We also hope the wounded officer makes a speedy and full recovery,” he said. “Our extended blue family in South Australia are hurting today. “I have given their Commissioner our blue family’s condolences, and passed on our sincere hope the officer who was wounded makes a full recovery. The flags outside all WA Police stations will fly at half-mast on Friday in a mark of respect.”
