Geraldton softball preliminary finals: Season is down to the wire as teams fight for a spot in the big dance

The Geraldton Softball Association is heating up as preliminary finals unfold this week, and teams are eager to secure a spot in the grand final.

In men’s division one, Suiside has already secured their final berth, concluding the season impressively with a significant win over Martians in the last ladder round.

Rams faced a challenging final game against Blaze, leading to three tie-breakers, but eventually emerged victorious.

They are now set to face Martians in their last opportunity to challenge Suiside in the final, with the game scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The smart bet leans towards Rams, given several players in top form both on the field and at bat, with the side having lost only two matches out of their last 10 and haven’t been defeated by Martians since early December.

Their strength lies in their depth, with young talents like Fletcher Harrison, Jake Chapman, and Marshall Harrison, guided by seniors Dion Harrison, Paul Valenti, and Matt Buscumb.

Martians, however, should not be underestimated, especially with the return of ‘Red’ Valenti to the team, although not in his usual catching role. His powerful hitting can change the course of the game.

In the women’s division one game, Suiside will face Marlins in a do-or-die match-up. Suiside are coming off a hard-fought win over Martians, facing a couple of tough calls.

The team will have a stern test against Les Purcell’s Marlins ladies on Saturday afternoon. Taryn and Zoe Purcell have consistently performed well, and Ava and Miley Gould can be game-changers when in good form.

Despite Marlins being favoured for the win, the match is expected to be closely contested.

In the division two men’s game, Blaze takes on Rams to determine who faces Suiside in the grand final, with both teams coming off strong seasons.

Blaze has only lost twice in their last eight matches and boasts the experience to navigate challenging situations.

However, Rams’ recent good form, winning their last three matches in style, and relying on experienced players may pose a threat to Blaze.

In the women’s division two game, Marlins will face Pi’s Panthers, with Suiside securing the club’s third direct grand final spot last round.

Marlins, the clear form side, narrowly missed the top ladder spot by one point but Pi’s will be a tough opponent, with the division two ladies being the only representatives in the finals this year.

Gunduwa will face Rams on Friday, for a chance to play the Blaze in the division three grand final.
