Geraldton star softball player Jy Thurstun gains valuable experience in Makassar Open in Indonesia
Geraldton’s Jy Thurstun showcased his talent on the international stage, representing the Southside Stingers at the Makassar Open International Softball Tournament in Indonesia.
In the humid conditions amid soaring temperatures and the playing field like soft powder, the young athlete delivered a strong performance as part of the predominantly under-23 men’s team.
Thurstun was invited to join the Southside Stingers by Tek Kemp, president of the Southside Stingers Softball Club, after previously bonding with several Queensland players during his time representing Australia in Mexico last year.
Kemp praised Thurstun for his natural talent and easy-going personality, making him a stand-out choice to be part of the team.
“Jy’s natural talent, confidence, open and friendly personality made him an easy choice to invite into our Southside Stingers men’s team,” Kemp said.
The Stingers had a stellar tournament, going undefeated in the pool stages without a single run scored against them.
Thurstun was pivotal in the team’s success, particularly in their opening game win against a strong Japanese side, which set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
“Conditions were tough. Humidity in the 90s. The playing field was like soft red talcum powder. Very friendly, respectful games. Stingers were the team to beat after their opening game win against Japan,” Thurstun said.
Despite their strong showing, the Stingers fell short in the grand final, losing a hard-fought match to Japan 5-3. However, the tournament was a significant milestone for Thurstun.
“There was a tremendous amount of great softball played with a lot of friendships made. It was a wonderful experience,” he said.
Thurstun’s’ performance in Indonesia has further solidified his reputation as one of Geraldton’s rising softball talents, and with eligibility for the next U23 World Cup, his future in the sport looks brighter than ever.
