Great Northern Football League grand final preview: Railways like their chances against red hot Rovers

Perfect weather, perfect result — and a perfect day. At least, that’s how it felt to Railways president Geoff Tubby after he watched his club’s league side go through to the grand final on Sunday. A flurry of late goals ended Chapman Valley’s tilt at flag contention and set up a home clash for the Blues. They will take on an undefeated Rovers this Sunday, who will be hoping an extra week’s rest, and the form guide will play in their favour, but the Demons will head into the clash as undisputed favourites. The Blues kicked 9.12 (66) to down Valley, who booted 3.4 (22). Tubby said he had been impressed with a side that had “no passengers” against the Royals — and any team that made the grand final had a shot at winning it. “It was an outstanding game by both teams,” he said. “Great game, that’s how finals football should be played. “(We) were good enough to break away in the last quarter and get some goals on the board. “We had no passengers, the whole team did their job and they’ve done their club proud. “Outstanding. If you’re in there (the final), you’ve got a 50-50 chance. Looking forward to it, hopefully the home ground might help us but who knows. Hopefully the weather is like it was today, perfect conditions.” Radio commentator Glenn Barndon said Railways had done well to get through the game without any injuries, but Rovers would be “red hot” favourites. “Railways will be close to full strength,” he said. “They will play with what they’ve got. Railways on their day, if they play consistent footy like they did today, can go a little bit further. (But) Rovers, after their performance, will be favourites.” In the reserves, Northampton defeated Rovers to advance to the grand final against the Chapman Valley. In the colts, Rovers’ overcame Railways to set up a flag clash with Brigades.
