A strong contingent of archers will be competing down in Peel this weekend for the Australian Bow Hunters WA State Titles.

The titles held at Peel Archery club will pit the best field archers from various clubs against each other to in a battle for State champion.

Field archery differs from its Olympic counterpart target archery in that players will shoot on a walking or roving course.

As opposed to standing at a set distance to hit a target, field archery sees competitors shoot targets at varying distances in realistic outdoor settings to emulate hunting situations.

Targets can vary from simple paper targets to 3D printed moulds of animals.

The competition will be held over two days with champions crowned on Sunday.

An eight-squad strong from the Greenough Archery Club will be sent down in the hope of emulating the success from last year’s titles.

Daniel Berry, Jenny Fox and Dave Hancock are all defending champions in their respective divisions.

Gavin Clarke and Cornad Sindelar will be hoping to go one better after finishing runner-up last year.

Daniel Berry said the squad is feeling good ahead of the competition.

“The squad is quite confident, we go down about four or five times a year for various interclub meets and usually come away with at least a placing,” he said.

“We are only a small club of around 25 members but we have three defending champions among them so it’s a strong group.”

For Berry archery is a family affair after joining the club around two years ago with his son James and daughter Arliah also part of the squad.

“My son is looking at getting into the WA State team for national titles and my daughter has also picked up the bow and really enjoyed it,” he said.

“It’ll be our first time competing down in Mandurah so we are looking forward to the experience.

“We’d love to get more youth involved in the club a lot of the divisions are dominated by people in their 40s or 50s so we are always looking to get more young people in the sport.”

The competition will begin at 11.45 am on Saturday.
