HMAS Sydney II 81st commemorative sunset Service: Outgoing warden Don Rolston hands over mantle to Peter Jones

Outgoing warden Don Rolston officially handed over the mantle to Peter “Spike” Jones at the HMAS Sydney II 81st commemorative sunset service on Saturday. The inaugural warden of the HMAS Sydney II memorial, Mr Rolston leaves the role after 13 years of service. Hundreds turned out to mark the special occasion on a chilly Geraldton night, including veterans, members of the public and distinguished guests such as commanding officer of the HMAS Sydney V, Andrew Hough. In his address, Mr Hough said it was an honour to attend the memorial for the first time and continue the connection between Sydney ships. Attendees were treated to performances by the Geraldton City Band and Sing Australia, while Champion Bay and Geraldton Senior High School students performed an original piece, “Let Me Go” written by Tobi William. As the sun began to set, the night concluded with simulated cannon fire and a display of flares as the City welcomed its newest warden.
