HMAS Sydney II 83rd anniversary commemoration: Gunfire, flares to form part of memorial service in Geraldton

The public is reminded they may hear loud noises and see flares on Tuesday night as the 83rd anniversary of the HMAS Sydney II’s sinking is commemorated in Geraldton. The sunset service at the HMAS Sydney II Memorial will include simulated gunfire about 7pm, as well as a display of multiple flares off the coast. HMAS Stirling commanding officer Capt. Ken Burleigh and Finding Sydney Foundation director Glenys McDonald will speak at the ceremony. “In keeping with tradition, we will come together with relatives of the fallen as well as serving and retired naval personnel to pay our respects to those who paid the ultimate price in defence of our country,” mayor Jerry Clune said. “I urge everyone to join us at the memorial to remember this poignant moment from our past.” The memorial carpark will be closed between 3pm and 8pm and will only be accessible to permit-holders, while Gummer Avenue will be closed at O’Collins Street to allow for one-way traffic from Thomas Avenue between the same times. Traffic management will be in place, and the community is asked to exercise caution and obey all warning signs and directions from authorised city of Greater Geraldton personnel and contractors. A free shuttle bus will leave from the QEII Centre at 5.15pm, picking up passengers at Geraldton City RSL on the way, and make the return journey from the memorial at 7pm.
