Horse and rider skills on display

The West Australian

Greenough Western Riding Club held its final Melita Stockfeeds Ranch Sort over November 10-11, which wrapped up its competitive cow-horse season for the year.

Thirty-five riders entered in the various six rounds, with scores from each round tallied for final results.

The sport requires two riders to work as a team to select and move cattle in a particular sequence according to numbers or colours marked on the cattle’s backs.

It is designed to showcase two separate horse and rider abilities. The “gate horse” holds the herd and turns back incorrect numbered/coloured cattle while the “sort horse” works in the herd to separate and cut out the correct numbered/coloured cattle in sequential order.

Exceptional teamwork and the rapport among the competitors made for a terrific atmosphere for the weekend.
